The desktop VR solution developed during NetConnect makes use of a video game engine,
Unity3D, to deliver an interactive environment where users, especially young pupils, can play and
learn the history of the different sites.
The application has been designed to ensure maximum usability. When the user starts the
application they can walk through the environment as they we playing a so-called first-person
video game. They can use the mouse, the keyboard as well as the Wii™ controller from Nintendo.
Simple online instructions show how to interact with the environment.
The user can freely walk across the reconstructed site and experience life as it was in the past.
Animated characters populate the cities, buildings have been recreated in order to represent their
original counterparts. Users walk along streets, enter temples and other key monuments. Users
can also enter buildings explore rooms, see details of furniture, pottery. Additional videos, images
and text can also be accessed by the user. Interactive explanation inform the users of the story of
the building or the artifact being explored.
